Ethos African Snippets

Well we are still here, despite the shock of the Red List kneejerk back in November, which meant lots of cancellations for most of us.  It is great to hear from so many of you that you are starting to notice a positive increase in interest to Africa.  Let’s hope that was the last major setback for us all.

GHOST MOUNTAIN INN

Leading UK Wildlife presenter Michaela Strachan has explored some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes. She is the perfect person to introduce us to her favourite place on earth, and the country she has chosen to make her home; South Africa.

Michaela spent time filming at Ghost Mountain Inn in KwaZulu-Natal soaking up the traditional culture, rich heritage and stunning landscapes.

THE ANT COLLECTION

When most of us go on safari, we want to see the Big 5.  Some of us are more interested in the smaller stuff or bird watching.  How many of us have seen Roan antelope in the wild?  What do we know about Roan? 

British journalist, Mark Everleigh recently visited Ant’s in the Waterberg and wrote a really interesting article for BBC Wildlife magazine.  Did you know that Roan are susceptible to frost and did you know that Ant’s is one of the only places that you can ride with Roan?

REDLIST KNEEJERK MEANS AN IMPROMTU VISIT TO GARONGA

Southern Africa was thrown another curve ball in late November when they told the world that they had discovered a new Covid variant.  The UK, followed by other countries rewarded their excellent science and honesty by immediately putting the region back on the Red List.  We were travelling in South Africa at the time .....

KAMBAKU KUBS

Nicola and Bryce at Kambaku are bringing up their children in the bush, and they  realised that kids on safari show us their amazement and wonder, that we as grown ups too often take for granted or simply overlook.

As a result they developed Kambaku Kubs, and it is one of the best kids programmes that I have seen.  Bryce explains it as a bush version of cubs, scouts or brownies. Shared are the same driving forces of creativity, love of the outdoors, self-realization and the ability to test one’s self and newly acquired knowledge.

IMAGE OF THE WEEK

During the last two years the MalaMala rangers have excelled themselves with their photos and videos that they have shared on social media.  One of the more recent videos has been shown on a number of platforms, and if you haven’t seen it yet it is worth watching.  Starting with some incredible footage of Rhinos and lions and then …… this is not for the squeamish.
