A very important part of choosing a safari camp is location. The location will determine the type of scenery, the variety and amount of wildlife and the number of other vehicles / people within the area.
The location of each of the Machaba camps has been carefully chosen by Alistair and this little piece describes our newest Botswana location - Monachira.
Along the Monachira River, a low-lying island has formed slowly over time.
Shaped by shifting water and changing seasons, it lies near the horseshoe-shaped lagoons of Xobega and Gcodikwe. On its edge, Machaba’s Monachira Camp is one of those quiet places where everything feels effortless and unhurried. Wherever you look, the floodplains stretch out below you, alive with wildlife and movement.
Stepping onto this island, everything slows into stillness, and it feels like you are exactly where you’re meant to be.
Located in the well-known Timbavati Game Reserve, Kambaku’s lodges are within easy reach of Hoedspruit airport.
The Timbavati is known for its diverse wildlife, including the Big Five (elephant, lion, leopard, rhino, and buffalo). You’ll also have the chance to see cheetahs, wild dogs, hyenas, and more. At the moment guests are privileged to see the elusive and rare white lion cub.
Kambaku traverse across 12,000 hectares and have exclusive traversing around their lodges. This area has plenty of water, due mainly to the Nhlaralumi River which usually floods once a year and fills a number of waterholes on the Kambaku land, and as a result one of the most game rich parts of the Timbavati.
By visiting Timbavati, you’ll be supporting the conservation efforts in the area, which include anti-poaching initiatives and community development programs.
South Africa's safari offering is sometimes underestimated, yet this remarkable destination deserves to be celebrated for its own extraordinary merits. Wildlife Highlights in April at Machaba Safaris

Endangered Species Day took place on Friday, 15th May. The annual event is observed on the third Friday of May, and celebrates wildlife conservation success stories and highlights ongoing efforts to protect the world's most vulnerable animals and their habitats.
In the Greater Makalali Private Nature Reserve, ongoing conservation efforts and careful management have supported a healthy and stable rhino population. It is a reminder that with the right approach, long-term protection is possible.
Each sighting is not only a privilege, but a reflection of the work being done to ensure these animals continue to move freely across the landscape
