Majeka is getting Greener

Majeka House first started to look into their environmental footprint through their food offering and it has grown from there.

Food miles became a buzzword, but did consumers really understand what that meant and why it was so important.  Essentially it is one factor in the way of measuring the environmental impact of the food that you purchase and these food miles contributes to about 6% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.

There are a number of effective initiatives that can and were put in place.  Majeka House always use ingredients that are in season and that are purchased locally.  In addition they make the maximum usage of their own gardens, growing their own herbs, fruit and vegetables where possible.  Not only were they doing their bit, but they were ensuring that their guests would get to experience the finest local South African ingredients when they created the tasty dishes that would be served at Majeka Kitchen.

Once Majeka House had maximised their reduction of food miles they turned their focus on their recycling efforts.  Recycling is crucial to the future health of our planet and the conservation of natural resources as neither is infinite.  By recycling we protect our eco systems, we conserve natural resources, prevent pollution, conserve energy, reduce landfill waste – the list goes on.

As such Majeka:

  • recycle their waste
  • use recycled water for our gardens
  • use 100% recyclable plastic water bottles made from sugarcane

All of these initiatives lead to Majeka House reducing their overall carbon footprint, but they realised they could still do more.  So they replaced all of their lightbulbs with energy saving bulbs and are now in the process of going solar.

If we all do our little bit to reduce our environmental / carbon footprint then collectively we will have a positive impact on Climate Change and preserving our natural resources for generations to come.
