Biodiversity is what makes an Africa safari special, and when any one species disappears, this will inevitably have an impact on others.
This month we are focussing on a few interesting titbits from our clients – highlighting some of the important species, that help keep the balance.
The Kruger National Park and more specifically the southern Kruger is particularly well known for the variety of game species found in the area.
MalaMala shares a long border with Kruger, has river frontage onto the Sand River, and years of maintaining the land, and as a result has an amazing diversity of wildlife and is particularly well known for likelihood of seeing the Big 5. Lion and Leopard sightings are extraordinary, big herds of buffalo a frequent occurrence and elephants and rhino are always around. In addition to all this, there have been a number of den sights on the property for wild dogs and leopards.

Nature's Clean-Up Crew: The White-Backed Vulture
These incredible birds are specialized scavengers, feasting on carcasses of large grazers like warthogs, zebras, and gazelles. With beaks made for soft tissues and keen eyesight they can spot their next meal while in the air. When you see a group of white-backed vultures, it's a sure sign of a nearby feast, attracting other scavengers to join in.
White-backed vultures are highly social and gregarious. In the presence of abundant food, you might spot as many as 100 gathered around a carcass. Despite their size, they can be surprisingly tame, even venturing into towns in search of food.
The most common vulture in sub-Saharan Africa, they boast a dark-brown face, long white neck, and a distinctive white back. Their wings, spanning up to 7.5 feet, are white on top and brown on the bottom, making them a magnificent sight in flight. www.kambakulodge.com

The Machaba camps in the Delta offer very different terrains and wildlife experiences.
The original camp, Machaba is in the Khwai conservancy, with year round water and prolific wildlife. Gomoti has water most of the year, and includes beautiful palm trees.
Kiri is located in a drier part of the Okavango, and game sightings are amazing and the terrain is incredibly beautiful with a mixture of grassland and woodland.
From next year, Machaba will have the added benefit of a permanent water camp, when they open Monachira. The Monachira channel is not far from the famous Gudigwa heronries, which is the nesting ground of thousands of herons, egrets and storks.

The perfect den for these very cute cubs at MalaMala
Zebras certainly win the 'best dressed' award. Many guests exclaim the zebras don't even look real, they're just so beautiful and unique. The young zebra fouls are even more so. At birth foals are generally born with blue eyes, a fluffy coat and mane, and usually brown stripes rather than black. After the first few months they will begin shifting to their adult coat, molting their baby fluff to reveal sleek coarse hair and their stripes will darken as will their eyes.
