Garonga Safari Co. is proud to be part of the Greater Makalali Private Game Reserve (GMPGR), a 27,000-hectare protected area in Limpopo, South Africa. Together with the Pidwa Wilderness Reserve, it forms the Greater Makalali Nature Reserve (GMNR), a thriving landscape for conservation and community development.
One of the GMNR’s key achievements is the reintroduction of African buffalo, once wiped out by disease. After years of breeding disease-free buffalo in a dedicated 400-hectare camp, a herd was successfully released into the wild in 2019—marking the return of the Big Five to the area after more than 50 years.
The Environmental Monitor (EM) Programme, launched to combat unemployment and poaching, employs local monitors who support patrols, conservation, and research efforts in GMPGR. It’s part of the broader Kruger to Canyons (K2C) Biosphere, enriching both people and wildlife.
Volunteers in the Siyafunda Research Programme also play a vital role. Since 2004, they’ve contributed to monitoring the reserve’s flora and fauna, supporting conservation through data collection and research.
GMPGR is also a pioneer in elephant immunocontraception, a humane method to manage elephant populations without disrupting herd dynamics. First tested in Makalali in 2000, the method is now used across 22 protected areas in South Africa. This non-invasive vaccine helps curb overpopulation, safeguarding both elephants and their habitats without resorting to culling.
Through these innovative efforts, Garonga and GMNR continue to set an example in sustainable wildlife conservation and community upliftment—preserving South Africa’s natural heritage for generations to come.
