Catharina’s Restaurant

The other restaurant at Steenberg is of course the award winning Catharina’s Restaurant, named after Steenbergs founder Catharina Ras, and with the inventive and talented Executive Chef Garth Almazan at the helm you can be sure of a dining experience that will be long remembered.

Garth is a born and bred Capetonian whose earliest memories of food are of the enjoyment of the delicious, spicy seafood starters that his Philippino father used to cook for the family. It was this early taste experience that has been a major inspiration for him. Garth has a multifaceted, international food backround, presenting and highlighting South African cuisine in Switzerland, the Netherlands and Ireland where he competed in various food festivals and competitions. He has met and cooked for some of the best in the world. His philosophy on food and cooking is to use the freshest available produce and to keep everything he does ‘simple’.

One of the most popular times to sample Garth’s food is Sunday afternoon at Steenberg’s  Sunday Jazz Lunch Buffets. There’s no better way to say goodbye to the weekend than with a lazy afternoon of delicious food and soft jazzy tunes, enjoyed below the beautiful Steenberg mountains and amongst the vines.

If you fancy trying to re-create the Catharina’s vibe at home why not have a go at one of Garth’s recipes like the Char-grilled Warthog Loin served with braised pork belly, potato gnocchi, sauté baby spinach, gorgonzola cream, baby mushrooms & red wine sauce.  Try it for Sunday lunch whilst listening to jazz for the full effect but don’t ask me where you buy Warthog Loin!

If the idea of eating Pumbaa and his mates isn’t for you then “no worries” as Catharina’s was one of the first restaurants in South Africa (if not the first) to offer a ‘Meat Free Mondays’ menu of hearty fine dining vegetarian options.

    Exploring Tanzanias Northern Circuit

It had been a few years since my last visit to Northern Tanzania, an area on many people’s bucket list, and an area with names that evoke all sorts of emotions. My memories of my first visit to Tanzania, about 20 years ago, are still with me – particularly the cheetah sighting in the tall grass of the Serengeti, when the cubs got told off by their Mum, because she lost the Tommy she had just caught for their dinner, as they were otherwise occupied with some rough and tumble.
