Dalton’s Dream Comes True - A long way away from rural Zululand…

Dalton, the ever-popular Zulu guide at Isandlwana Lodge in the KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields of South Africa will see his greatest aspirations realized this weekend as he attends the Veteran’s Day Parade in Cardiff on Saturday as a guest of The Royal Welsh Museum.  It will be an incredible journey to learn more about his roots and the Battles in which his forefathers fought, kindly sponsored by generous guests, who were touched by his story.

Lindizwe/Dalton Ngobese, has a proud history tied in with the Battlefields!  Dalton’s Great Great Grandfather, Inkosi (Chief) Sihayo was one of the leading Chiefs of King Cetswayo in 1879.

Mehlokazulu, Sihayo’s son (and Dalton’s Great Grandfather) led a number of companies of the iNgobamakhozi Regiment who formed part of the left horn of the Zulu Army that triumphed at Isandlwana on the 22nd January 1879.  He was also present at the battles of Khambula and Ulundi.

Dalton confessed to guests John and Sally Bradley when they were visiting Isandlwana Lodge some time ago, that he dreamed on someday visiting Wales because he wanted to go to the Brecon Museum which houses the records of the 24th of Foot, the regiment that his ancestors helped defeat at Isandlwana and to see some castles.

The Bradleys remembered Dalton’s wish and, touched by his story, arranged his airfare and UK visa for a visit on the 23rd of June 2010 as a complete surprise to him.

And to further the dream, another frequent Lodge guest, Bill Cainan, will host Dalton while he is in Wales. Bill Cainan is an expert on the history of castles in Wales and has written information pamphlets that are given to tourists for several of them, so Dalton could not have a better guide to take him through castles that he has longed to see for many years.

Also contributing to Dalton’s itinerary is Brecon Museum Curator, Martin Everett.   Dalton will attend a Veteran’s Day parade in Cardiff on the 26th of June as a guest of the Museum that is now known as The Royal Welsh Museum.

Watch this space for a report back on Dalton’s trip!  We have a couple more surprises for him that not even he is expecting yet!
